With the rainy season, plus holidays, and general life getting in the way, I haven't worked with Maya nearly as much as I've wanted to or that I should. I have had a friend coming over and working with her for me when she can so Maya has been getting attention and some saddle time.
Yesterday I had some more time that usual so I headed on over to my Grandmother's where I board my horses. My intention was to take Max out first and ride for a bit in the arena since he and I haven't been out in a few weeks either.
I headed out with his halter and who was there to meet me at the gate and eagerly put her head in the halter? Maya! So I decided to take her up on her offer. We trekked across the yard towards the arena, me allowing her to nibble at grass along the way. She spooked once at a shelf so I worked with her to get passed it. She has gotten to the point now where she will startle back and look at new objects but not necessarily completely freak out. It's progress.
I took her to the arena which meant going through the two older geldings in the front pasture. In the past when I would walk her near Skeeter she would go completely mare and present and not move... So I put her on Mare Harmony and it actually seems to be working. She was still pretty interested in him and presented once, but I was able to get her moving and she wasn't completely obsessed. I decided to take her rope off and let her run some energy off in the arena. She did not disappoint.
I think one of the things that scares me a little with this mare is that she can run pretty fast and loves to buck up in the air and throw her back feet out. The funny thing is that Max will do that as well, but I never imagine him doing it while under saddle. Maya is just such a different horse and building that level of trust with her has been a challenge.
I put her back on her lead after a bit and after the geldings went back to their grazing and worked on some basic ground work with Maya.
* String over the back - great
* porcupine - great
* driving - great
*yo-yo -perfect
*circle game - good
I also groomed her since she is a mud ball and her mane was all twisted into knots. She did pretty well. Still antsy about her back feet, but we managed. I even threw my sweatshirt over her since she was very interested in it when I took it off.
She felt very in - tune and I ended the session before I think she was ready to end it. She did have one sticky spot, did not want to walk through the very center of the tracks in the arena. The rest of the arena had been dragged but there was one smooth tiny circle in the middle that she just did not trust. I ended up standing in the middle of that spot and having her circle around it and then come in to me. I didn't push the issue but it was interesting to see her avoid the spot.
Put her fly mask back on and put her away feeling overall very successful.
